Express
Singer/Songwriter Jack Licitra wanted to try a fresh approach to folk and roots
music by taking down some musical walls and watching what happens. Overtime, his
project, Jack’s Waterfall has evolved into a traveling musical community of sorts.
The spirit of inclusiveness is at the heart of this project and especially this
new CD, as suggested by the chorus of the title track "Express" "I want to draw
my circle to include the rest, help me express.”This CD plays with simple musical
colors like the hammond organ, acoustic guitar and Jack Licitra’s unique voice and
join thems with a larger palate of his friends and their creations. The title track
juxtaposes a Bo Didley beat with a classical string quartet and we go from there.
The opening track “I am a Rhythm” features a chorus of music students while the
memorable “Bella” features a vocal sample of Hope Children’s Fund Choir from Mehru,
Kenya. (An orphanage that Jack and his music students help to fund.) “Hope in Exile”
features tongue drums made by highschool “principles of engineering” students in
2008 in a concert for CROP. (An international Farm and Seed charity) The CD cover
actually features a charcoal of one of these drums. Express also features a myriad
of other musical instruments and wonderful musicians as well. Barry Bryson lends
a hand with muted trumpet and flugle horn reminiscing shades of Miles Davis and
Hugh Masekela. Jon Preddice is dominant on Cello on many tracks, but his solo is
a standout on “At The Dawn.” Shenole Latimer plays alto and soprano saxophones adding
just the right amount of New Orleans spice.” Other highlights include the hopeful
“Vigil” featuring some lush harmonic colors against Jack’s guitar percussion. “Proud
Young Men” show cases the droning string tapping of a national steel.
We hope you enjoy and have the opportunity to experience the heart of this release!
